What E1 Means

E1 means different things on two DCS outdoor cooling generations. On the RF24RE / RF24LE refrigerators, the RF24RE3 / RF24LE3 update and the first-generation RF24T and RF24BT beer dispensers, E1 flashes with the red Alarm light and a one-second beep when the control decides its temperature sensor is not working. On the older RF24D refrigerated drawers, the DCS service manual lists E1 as a compressor error: the control saw the compressor drawing too much or too little current.

Common Causes of E1

  • RF24RE / RF24LE / RF24T family: temperature sensor open or shorted, often from water in its connector
  • RF24D drawers: compressor wires loose at the terminal or the overload
  • RF24D drawers: failed compressor start relay (PTC starter) or overload protector
  • Control board misreading a good sensor or compressor current

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Read the model on the serial plate (upper left inside the cabinet) so the right meaning is used. Press any key to mute the beep; the code keeps flashing. Check that the unit is on its own grounded GFCI outlet and that the front grille is not blocked by leaves or a mat. DCS clears codes only by unplugging and reconnecting power, so one reset is fair, but if E1 returns within a day, move perishables to another cooler and book the visit.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The compressor terminal cover and start parts sit behind the lower grille on a live 115-volt circuit, and a compressor that will not start can be hot enough to burn.
  • Testing a drawer compressor means reading amperage under load, and a sealed-system diagnosis needs EPA-certified refrigerant handling if the compressor itself has failed.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E1 FAQ

On the RF24RE and RF24LE family, the sensor alarm means the control is no longer measuring the cabinet, so it can overcool or stop cooling without warning. Keep a thermometer inside until the sensor is replaced.

Power cycling is the only reset DCS gives, so the code clearing proves nothing. If the cause is still there, E1 comes back once the control runs its checks again.
