The BE1-48RC-N lets owners swap a grilling zone for a charcoal insert that sits over the gas burner. It is a clever design, but the ash and fat that fall through the charcoal grate land near the burner ports under it, and uneven gas flames on that side are the usual result when the insert is used often without cleaning.
DCS warns against using the charcoal insert or its grate over the sear burner position, and against lighter fluid on any Series 9 model. When we inspect a BE1-48RC-N we pull the insert, clean the burner beneath it, and then judge whether the flame pattern is healthy.
